Frequently Asked Questions

Fuel/Diesel

How can I improve my diesel fuel usage for better mileage?

We can order a wide range of accessories and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) replacement parts, which are parts identical to those installed on your vehicle when it was initially built.

Are there differences in diesel fuel grades?

No. 1 diesel is a more refined fuel with a higher octane rating than No. 2 diesel. No. 1 is similar to octane in gas products. Red diesel is a good option with high sulfur and a good octane number, however, it comes with use restrictions.

What is red diesel fuel?

Red diesel is a quality, high-sulfur fuel for off-road use only. It’s not allowed for on-highway use, and fines for violating this rule are high. Additionally, high sulfur fuels can damage newer engines and will void warranties, but they run great in non-emission-compliant engines.

What goes into converting to bio-diesel?

Manufacturers will only approve B5, or 5% bio; anything over that will void the warranty. At this point, we’ve seen more harm than good, but with better refining, this product could be promising.

What causes diesel fuel contamination and how can I prevent it?

Contaminants like water, algae, dirt, and rust can enter diesel tanks through poor storage, old fuel, or condensation. We recommend regular tank inspections, using biocide treatments, and replacing fuel filters frequently to keep your fuel system clean and protect your injectors.

How long does diesel fuel last in storage?

Diesel typically lasts 6–12 months without additives. With stabilizers, it can last up to 2 years. If your equipment or vehicle sits for long periods, we offer fuel conditioning services to prevent gelling, microbial growth, and performance loss.

Can cold weather affect my diesel fuel?

Yes. Diesel can gel in freezing temperatures, which clogs filters and lines. We offer winterizing services including anti-gel additives and cold-weather fuel blends to ensure your engine runs reliably during Hill Country winters.

Parts, Maintenance & Electronics

How can I remove rotors on a truck?

Some models require a special socket to remove the inner axle nut. Remove the 4×4 hub, lock ring, and the very thin walled nut.

What’s the purpose of the “Wait to Start” light?

The “wait to start” light indicates that the glow plugs are pre-heating the cylinders before fuel injection for engine start-up. Ignoring this cycle can cause excessive exhaust smoke and, on cold days, the engine may fail to start entirely. Wait for the light to turn off before starting the vehicle.

Can I remove my muffler?

If the truck was built with a muffler, it has to be there when inspected, per law. Newer engines with EGR systems could be damaged if removed.

How do I know if my turbocharger is failing?

Common signs include loss of power, whining noises, black smoke from the exhaust, or excess oil consumption. We can run diagnostics to check for worn bearings, boost leaks, or clogged oil lines to prevent costly engine damage.

Why is my check engine light on in my diesel truck?

It could be due to issues like glow plug failure, sensor malfunction, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) problems, or injector faults. We use advanced scan tools to quickly identify and fix the root cause.

What are the signs of a failing EGR valve?

Poor acceleration, rough idling, increased emissions, and reduced fuel economy are common symptoms. Our technicians can test and clean or replace the EGR system to restore performance and compliance.

When should I replace my glow plugs?

Typically every 60,000–100,000 miles, but it depends on the make and usage. If your diesel engine struggles to start, especially in cold weather, it’s time to inspect the glow plug system.
